St Arvans & Penterry Village Fete

Dog show poster

Would they come? As the sun shone over St Arvans on Saturday morning there were rumours that the dog show would prove popular. In high spirits we set up the ring and rehearsed our roles until we could do no more. At this point a menacing wall of cloud loomed from the direction of Penterry – too late to cancel now!

As the heavens opened we huddled under a single umbrella, all thoughts of an orderly booking process washed away. Resident DJ “MC LuDO-G” kept our spirits up with “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life” and other carefully-chosen music. Already we were busy with the first registrations, when we glanced up and beheld a rising tide of dogs and owners streaming from the car park, with more cars queuing on the road to enter.

Somehow we coped with the booking-in just in time for Kate Humble to declare the St Arvans and Penterry fête open, and immediately ringmaster Steve Lynch was hard at work marshalling the entrants for the first class. The afternoon raced on under clearing skies, and by the time we reached the climax of the Best In Show selection, sales of ice cream and Pimms had caught up with the hot dogs and cream teas.

At last we had time to draw breath and enjoy the sight of the largest crowd seen at St Arvans for many a year enjoying a great array of entertainments from wellie-wanging to face-painting, excellent refreshments and a good old-fashioned day out.

Congratulations to our winners: Dog with the waggiest tail  - Chloe (Hazel Williams); Most handsome dog  - Levi (Tracy Mulligan); Most beautiful bitch – Fudgerella (Ffion & Bryony); Best trick – Bella (Janine); Best 6 legs – Alfie (Francesca Lee); Fancy dress – Felix, Flossie and the Royal Wedding Party (the Learmond family); Dog the judges would most like to take home – Myffi (Sheena Houghton); Dog most like its owner – Hermione (Alicia Fry).

Worthy Best in Show winners, selected not only by Kate Humble but by popular acclaim, were Felix, Flossie and the Royal Wedding Party aka the Learmonds.
