Sadly we have had to bow to the inevitable and postpone the Penterry Proms until next year. We have had tremendous support from the community and local businesses, and we are confident that we will be able to hold an even bigger and better event when the present emergency is past. We have set a provisional date for the rescheduled Penterry Proms on Saturday 10th July 2021 – save the date!
If you have any queries, please contact us at info@penterry.org.uk .

It is traditional on Rogation Day to pray for a good harvest in the coming season and to 'beat the bounds' of the parish, but with combined parishes this would be a very long walk! Instead parishioners of any faith or none are invited to join Fr. Michael for any part of a walk between the churches, starting at St. Deiniol's Church, Itton at approx. 9 a.m. on Sunday May 1st, from St. Arvans at around 11 a.m., from St. Mary's, Penterry at 12:15 and from St. James, Devauden at 2 p.m. for the final stretch to Holy Cross, Kilgwrrwg.
For more information please call the Vicarage, St. Arvans on 01291 622064

It was a sad day when we learned of the death of Ken Howells. To many at Penterry, Ken was the man who for some years had tamed the churchyard at St. Mary’s – not to manicured perfection, but, as befits a country churchyard, he left the wildflowers to bloom and seed, before the laborious task of mowing got under way.
Ken was born into a large local family, and worked for most of his life in forestry and agriculture. His brother tells many delightful tales of childhood mischief, but as a man, Ken was capable, considerate, calm and dependable. His sense of humour rarely deserted him (a true asset if you are working with animals!), and when things went wrong, he would crack a wry joke, come up with a fresh idea and see the job through.
On his retirement, and following the death of his wife, Lil, Ken took on the care of both the churchyards at Penterry and Trelleck Grange churches as well as general garden work. But at his funeral, attended by many friends and family, it became obvious that he will be most remembered for his generous nature and willingness to help anyone less able than himself. The repeated theme was that he supported the housebound, aged or infirm right up until his final illness. All this he undertook in a modest and quiet manner. He was truly an example to us all.

Visitors to Penterry Church will see that repairs have been made to the wall on the east side of the churchyard, following the recent collapse of part of the wall. We are grateful to local builders Kevin Hunt and David Evans for an excellent job done at short notice. This unexpected call on our funds means we will have to work even harder to raise the sums needed for works on the church itself!

Full church for Penterry Carol Service! |
View more |
Added: Sat 26th Dec 09
Despite the field being covered with snow (and the road to Penterry being somewhat tortuous!) the annual carol service at Penterry enjoyed a full congregation with the overflow standing in the porch. The church looked beautiful with simple arrangements of holly and other greenery for the very special candlelit service.
It was decided to go ahead with the service despite the weather although we did not expect many to brave the elements. However, a steady stream of cars and walkers continued to pour through the gate right up to the start of the service. It was lovely to see many old friends and supporters and some new arrivals in the area as well.
The service itself was very moving with traditional carols and readings from the King James Bible, the modern writings of R.S. Thomas and a poem written by two young South African boys - Jesus is better than Santa. Particular thanks to the young lady who knew all the words to Away in a Manger and helped out the adults!
Thanks to Father Mark for taking the service, to Kate and Bob for accompanying the carols and to those who decorated the church and provided the refreshments.
Everyone enjoyed the mulled wine and mince pies at the end of the service to fortify them for the difficult journey home again.
A big thank you to everyone who came - it was the perfect start to Christmas.
